REACH regulations

Arch Water applies the new REACH regulations on the limitation of chemical hazards.

REACH stands for Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals.

The objective of REACH is to improve the level of protection of health and the environment while enhancing competitiveness and innovation in the European Union.

In order to limit the risks associated with the production and use of chemicals, REACH provides for the introduction of safety data sheets designed to provide information about the dangers of the use, handling and storage of chemicals.
The evaluation made by the European Community concerns 130 chemicals of the 141 chemicals considered to be a priority.
Manufacturers and importers of chemicals will eventually have to use independent laboratories to evaluate the risks to health and the environment of these chemicals.

Reach provides for:
« Pre-registration of all chemicals produced or imported in quantities of more than one tonne per year in the European Union, before 1 December 2008;
Compulsory registration of chemicals (produced or imported in quantities of more than 1 t/year), with the data sent to the European Agency based in Helsinki (ECHA). This data must include information on the physicochemical, toxicological and ecotoxicological properties and an evaluation of the risks to health and the environment for all users of this chemical in the user chain of products.
»

Implementation:
REACH entered into force on 1 June 2007 and will be introduced progressively until 2018.
